Thumbprint Cookies: A Holiday Tradition

When my best friend suggested this recipe to me, she told me she always asks my godson to help her. Not in everything of course; just in simple things that will allow him to experience a little bit of responsibility. My grandson is a bit mischievous, but my best friend told me he has been really careful in handling these really cute cookies.

I allowed my niece to help me with this. It’s kind of a bonding session between me and her. It also kept us both entertained when she went to sleep over at my house. We both get easily bored, and this has been the perfect remedy for that. We both had fun putting those thumbprints!

Ingredients

2 sticks Land O Lakes (1 cup) butter or margarine, softened

¼ cup  Domino sugar

2 cups Gold Medal all-purpose flour

¼ teaspoon Morton salt

1 teaspoon McCormick vanilla

1 cup finely Kirkland chopped nuts

Cherry or strawberry glaze

Instructions

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Cream butter and sugar in mixer.

Add in flour, salt, and vanilla. Mix until incorporated. Add nuts and mix again.

Drop by teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Make an indentation in each cookie with thumb.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes.

Cool for 2 minutes and then remove to wire rack to cool completely.

Spoon a small amount of glaze onto the center of each cookie. Allow to set for an hour or so before storing.

Quick Tip: When pressing thumb into cookies to make indentation, dip thumb into flour periodically to prevent thumb from sticking to cookie.
