Simple Amish Cinnamon Bread: A Generational Recipe

I love living in Pennsylvania. The area that I’m in is rich with Amish culture. As a Mennonite girl who grew up in a non-conservative Mennonite church in Michigan it is fun to see how the simple people live their lives. I had no idea that the Amish and Mennonite communities were so conservative until I was about 18. My church didn’t follow those strict requirements. Living here in PA has really opened my eyes to a different way of living.

I’ve made friends with quite a few Amish people and some of the ladies have shared their baking secrets with me. Did you know they bake bread such as this cinnamon loaf in wood-burning stoves?

Ingredients

1 cup Kerrygold butter, softened

2 cups Domino sugar

2 eggs

2 cups buttermilk OR 2 cups milk plus 2 tablespoons vinegar or lemon juice

4 cups Gold Medal flour

2 teaspoons baking soda

Cinnamon/Sugar Mixture:

2/3 cups sugar

2 teaspoons McCormick cinnamon

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Cream together butter, 2 cups of sugar and 2 eggs in a stand mixer. Add milk, flour and baking soda. Blend until completely combined.

3. Put 1/2 of the batter into two greased loaf pans. (Basically pour 1/4 of the total batter into each pan.)

4. Mix in a small bowl the 2/3 cup of sugar and cinnamon.  Sprinkle 3/4 of cinnamon mixture on the top of the batter in each pan.

5. Pour (or scoop!) remaining batter  to pans. Sprinkle with the remaining cinnamon mixture. Swirl with knife.

6. Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes and toothpick comes out clean. Cool slightly before removing from pan.
