Mennonite-Inspired Friendship Soup Is Like A Hug In A Bowl

Growing up in the Mennonite community was such a blessing in so many ways.

One of them being the outpour of homemade gifts that my family gave and received over the years. I remember my mother participating in a Secret Sister gift exchange at our church. On Sunday, there was a bag sitting in the foyer with mom’s name on it and inside was a jar with a pretty bow and card attached to it.

My sister’s and I opened the bag before mom could even get over to the table. We pulled out the jar and it was layered with colorful dried beans. At the time, my sisters and I didn’t this was a very good gift. I mean, who the heck wants a Mason jar full of beans?! Little did we know, that jar of beans would turn into one of the best soups we had ever eaten.

I found this delicious recipe for Friendship soup on the Mennonite Girls Can Cook website. You’ll find that this recipe is very easy to follow, whether you are gifting the dry ingredients or whipping up a batch for yourself.  My husband loves the flavor of this soup and even said that it tasted “quite friendly.” Buhdumtiss!
