Hark! The Herald Angels Are Singing Of Ham And Split Pea Soup!

My husband loves split pea soup and I’m willing to bet most men do as well when they return from a long day of work.  Whether your man sits in an office all day or is a construction worker, this soup is sure to make his day! Seriously, just watch his face when he walks through the door and catches a whiff of that heavenly aroma wafting through his house. He will be all smiles, for sure!

Slow cookers are the best invention for a good ol’ homemade soup.  No need to go back to restaurants after trying this one, that’s for sure!

Ingredients

16 oz. (~4 cups) dried split peas

1½ lb. ham bone, meaty

3 carrots, diced

1 yellow onion, diced

1 shallot, diced

2 stalks celery, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp.McCormick dried thyme

½ tsp. McCormick ground black pepper

1 bay leaf

6 cups Swanson low sodium chicken stock

Instructions

In the bowl of a slow cooker, combine the split peas, carrots, yellow onion, shallot, celery, garlic, thyme, pepper, bay leaf, and chicken stock. Mix well.

Add the ham bone on top and nestle into the contents of the slow cooker.

Cover and cook on Low for 5-6 hours, or until ham is tender and easily pulls off the bone.

Remove the ham and shred into bite-size pieces using two forks, then return the ham meat to the slow cooker, and discard the bone.

Remove the bay leaf and serve.
