Authentic Amish Casserole: Yum-A-Setta

When it comes to potluck meals yum-a-setta is one of the most popular at my church. The church I attend if Mennonite so I suppose some of the folks there gleaned this recipe from their Amish neighbors. I am so glad that The BZ Home That Love Built shared this recipe with us all. I’ve eaten this casserole many times but I never knew how to make it. Now that I do I’ll be making it all the time!

Check out what my pals over at The BZ House That Love Built had to say about this recipe:

I have made and taken this particular meal to so-o-o many people over the years. Most likely, if I’m only bringing you one meal, this is what you will be getting. Why this one? Because 98% of people that eat it, like it. HONEST! Mom’s will tell me they have a couple of picky eaters, and yet they ask for more of this dish. Elderly people have told me, “it’s basically such a simple dish, yet it’s so good!”  Therefore, according to and because of, I highly recommend that you try this recipe out on your own family, and then make it again the next time your taking a meal in to somebody ;-).

A family at our church recently adopted a beautiful baby girl and I plan to take this meal over to their family. They are a household of 8 so this casserole will certainly feed them all.

Ingredients

2 lbs hamburger
salt and pepper to taste (I don’t think it needs either)
a little Domino brown sugar
1/4 onion, chopped (I use a whole onion)
1 can Campbell’s tomato soup, undiluted
1 8oz. pkg. Velveeta
1 – 16 oz. pkg. Barilla egg noodles
1 can cream of chicken soup, undiluted

Instructions

Brown hamburger with salt, pepper, brown sugar and onions. Add tomato soup.

Cook egg noodles. Drain. Add cream of chicken soup.

Layer hamburger mixture and noodle mixture in casserole dish or baking pan, with slices of Velveeta cheese in between them.

Bake at 350o for 1/2 an hour.

Quick Tip: Instead of 2 lbs. ground beef you can swap one of them out for a pound of ground turkey.

Thank you to The BZ House That Love Built for this amazing recipe.

Wow, this recipe is so like one my mom made when I was a kid and I’m 66 now! She called it sham-a-setta. I don’t remember the recipe exactly, but all the flavors were the same. I’m going to make this dish for dinner tonight. Thanks for sharing!
