When it comes to vintage recipes I am all ears. I LOVE hearing about the foods that our grandmothers used to cook, especially desserts.
This vintage German chocolate sheet cake is a real gem. It’s easy to make and tastes like a miracle. I love the simple ingredients in this recipe and how nicely they come together. I made this cake for a church cookout last summer and it was a mega-hit amongst the masses. Grandma would have been so very proud of my efforts 🙂
Now, I don’t get to make this cake as often as I’d like as my husband hates coconut and my youngest son has a tree nut allergy. I’ve tried to leave the tree nuts out of the mix(yes, coconut is a tree nut) but the cake is no longer considered German chocolate if you do that so what’s the point?
However, when we have a family gathering or other special event I will make this vintage German chocolate cake and make my husband and the boy something else. Everyone is happy when I do it that way. A win for Team Mom!

Quick Tip: This sheet cake feeds a large crowd of hungry mouths. You may cut the recipe in half and bake in a 9×13 pan if you would prefer.
Recipe is described as a sheet cake in several places. Yet baking directions say to use a 9×13 or slightly larger lasagna, as mom called it. Soooo, do I dbl the recipe for a sheet pan, halve the recipe for the 9×13 pan, or use recipe as printed and use in the 9×13 pan?!? Thanks for clarification
