I never once thought I was deprived growing up. I always had everything I needed. A roof over my head, clothes on my back, and food in my belly. We never really got anything extra that we didn’t need, except for on special occasions, but I was okay with that. When my mom would go grocery shopping, she would buy quick meals for the most part, and cheap ones. Not that she wasn’t good at the dishes that she made, she just never really strayed away from her traditional foods.
It wasn’t until I got my first job did I ever have a homemade pot pie. We had eaten pot pies at home before, but they always were individual sized and they came out of a box from the freezer. When I told the girls at work that, they looked at me like a space alien. It was normal to me so I didn’t care.
When this pot pie that one of my co-workers had brought in was done, I won’t lie, I was excited to try it. It looked just like this one from Food.com. When I finally got to try a bite, I couldn’t believe how tasty it was. There was no comparison to the chicken pot pies that I was used to. I wouldn’t change a thing about my childhood, except maybe including this meal once and a while!
