I didn’t mean to do it! I swear! I just got home from a client meeting, tired and hungry. I was halfway to my front door when I smelled it. It was enticing, but it was quite a weird combination of aromas. Unconsciously, I followed the smell, which led me to the space between my house and my neighbor’s—straight to her kitchen. I didn’t know how long I stayed there.
I just realized I was standing in front of her window until she actually greeted me with a hearty good evening and a laugh. I call her Marti (not her real name). She is a 65-year-old kind and happy lady who gives me and my boyfriend weird pies and cakes that actually taste good.
Weird because she loves to experiment and puts ingredients together that you will never ever think would work well, yet they do. Having been caught snooping around accidentally, Marti invited me inside for a cup of tea. Her husband was away so she was alone.
While it sounded like a plot to a horror fairytale akin to Hansel and Gretel’s Witch Hunters, it wasn’t. Marti was really one bubbly lady who loves inviting neighbors for tea. She gave me a slice of her raspberry pizza, the one that I smelled from my yard, and served me some tea.
While I didn’t like the thought of berries on pizza, I still gave it a try. Surprisingly, it tasted really good! Kind of like a cheesecake, but with very little sugar. I asked her for the recipe and made it for my boyfriend. He loved it too! We’ve been making it every chance we get.
