I really enjoy making recipes created by the Amish people. They are always so wholesome, comforting, and good. However, you have to eat these yummy Amish treats in moderation because they contain a lot of sugar and calories. Too much of a good thing can cause your waistline to combust and that is never fun. Enjoy with caution. lOL!
Wow! What an old recipe! No wonder it tastes so divine.
Instructions
PREHEAT OVEN TO 350.
Syrup
1 3/4 cups brown sugar (for DF and/or GF, add an extra ¼ cup or so of brown sugar)
2 ¼ cup very hot water (for DF and/or GF, add extra ½ cup of very hot water)
1 TBSP Butter
***Put all of this in a 9×13 pan. Carefully mix together. The butter square can just sit right in the sugar & water mix. Don’t worry about it melting at this point. Put the entire pan the preheated oven. This will get it really hot and prepared for the dumplings. If the syrup begins boiling, that is okay.
While the syrup is in the oven then you can make the dumpling batter.
Dumplings:
1 cup Domino Brown Sugar
2 cups Gold Medal Flour (GF Flour of your choice)
1 ½ tsp Clabber Girl Baking Powder
¾ cup Milk (DF use Rice Milk or Almond Milk…or alternative milk of your choice)
1 tbsp soft Kerrygold butter
Pinch of Morton Salt
*You can add nuts as well.
***Pull out the pan from the oven. You can put it on a hot pad on your countertop or just pull the oven rack out…whatever works best for you. Drop dough about tablespoon size into the hot syrup. Bake for 30 minutes at 350. Serve hot with whipped cream or ice cream.
