Grandma Joyce’s Calico Beans – They’ll Make You Trot To The Table

The first time I had calico beans was when I met my husband’s grandmother. I had never eaten calico beans before and let me tell you, her recipe did not disappoint me. These beans are tender, savory, and sauced to perfection. I love the ground beef that is in the recipe, too. Talk about a heavenly treat! Grandma makes these beans all of the time for holiday meals and potluck suppers. Everyone enjoys them.

I agree! We love these beans over in my neck of the woods.

Ingredients

1 pound hamburger

8 slices Hormel bacon, diced

½ cup chopped onion

½ cup Domino brown sugar

½ cup Heinz ketchup

1 Tablespoon French’s yellow mustard

1 Tablespoon Molasses

1 teaspoon Morton salt

1 – 15 ounce can of green lima beans (drained)

1 – 15 ounce can of kidney beans

1 – 15 ounce can of pork and beans

¼ cup of green or red pepper cut up (optional)

Instructions:

Brown hamburger and (optional peppers) until no longer pink. Drain and set aside.

Fry bacon and onions. Drain the fat and add bacon to meat.

Pour the hamburger, onions and bacon into a 3 quart casserole dish with lid.

Add all the other ingredients and mix well.

Bake covered in oven at 325 for 1 hour.

Uncovered and bake an additional 15 minutes so sauce gets a little thicker.

I’d like to make these in a crockpot/slow cooker. Do you have any idea how much cooking time would be required ?
