Ol’ Uncle Tony was a whiz in the kitchen. A 100% Italian man living in America of course had to open up his own restaurant. There’s something about the men in that culture that makes them the best chefs. He could make everything from pizza and subs to the most sophisticated pastas and meat dishes. Whenever we had outdoor family events, there was no kitchen, so he had to prepare his dish ahead of time.
That’s when he usually opted for the Italian style sloppy joes. They were by far better than a traditional sloppy joe. He usually brought a huge slow cooker full of the meat with a ton of bread rolls and extra cheese for topping.
Whenever possible, I would scoop some extra into a bowl and take it home with me. It made a great lunch the next day at work. I found a similar recipe on The Pioneer Woman for this amazing sandwich recently.
When I tried it at home, I couldn’t believe how close it was to Uncle Tony’s recipe. My whole family agreed and asked that I make them again real soon. I’m sure that won’t be a problem!
